Naneghat Trek – Ancient Trade Route of the Sahyadris
The Naneghat Trek is one of Maharashtra's most unique historical treks, taking you through an ancient mountain pass in the Western Ghats at an elevation of approximately 2,600 ft. Located near Junnar in Pune district, Naneghat once served as an important trade route connecting the Konkan coast with the Deccan plateau. The name "Naneghat" comes from the words "Nane" (Coin) and "Ghat" (Mountain Pass), as traders were required to pay tolls while crossing this route centuries ago.
Steeped in history, Naneghat dates back over 2,000 years to the reign of the Satavahana Dynasty. The ancient caves, rock-cut inscriptions, and stone structures found along the route offer a fascinating glimpse into Maharashtra's rich cultural heritage. These inscriptions are considered some of the oldest examples of ancient Indian writing and highlight the significance of Naneghat as a major trading corridor between Kalyan, Sopara, Junnar, and Paithan.
The trek itself is relatively easy and takes you through scenic mountain trails, rocky pathways, caves, and breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the Sahyadri ranges. During the monsoon, the region transforms into a lush green paradise with mist-covered valleys, waterfalls, and dramatic cliff views. Combining history, nature, and adventure, the Naneghat Trek is a perfect weekend getaway for trekkers, history enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers alike.
